These are all natural reactions for the helmsman, who is probably totally unaware that he isn't steering the required course. However the resulting course can be 5° or more away from the one you actually wanted and this can add up to a considerable error over a distance. You need to take this into account when calculating a dead-reckoning position and the only way to do this is to watch the heading being steered over a period of time. MANY HELMSMEN WILL STEER A COURSE TO ONE SIDE OR THE OTHER OF THE DESIRED COURSE.
Estimating your position is as much about knowing where you can't be as where you could be. If the sounder shows a certain depth then you cannot be in deeper or shallower water (as long as you make allowance for the rise and fall of the tide, if this is significant). Always allow a degree of latitude when using soundings in this way because you are unlikely to get pinpoint accuracy and the chart sounding may not reflect what is actually there. Consider the soundings as a guide rather than an absolute fix.
In fact, unless the water is very shallow you are unlikely to see breaking waves if they are under one metre high. Also, if you are viewing them from seaward, which is most likely, they might not be as clearly visible as they would be from the other direction. Breaking seas on rocks are likely to be much more localised but again, they won't always be clearly visible from seaward and if there’s a big sea running, they may be lost in the general breaking wave crests associated with the strong wind.
